From winter to summer in the greenhouse: the growing season has begun. 🌱
22/04/26
The greenhouse is never really quiet, but there are those moments in the year when you feel that everything changes. This is one such moment. Winter is coming to an end and slowly the last winter vegetables are making way for all that is yet to come. The growing season has begun.
Last period we were still able to harvest crops that can withstand the cold well, such as fennel, kohlrabi and leeks. Strong vegetables that grow quietly and take their time. But as the light increases and the temperature rises, the pace in the greenhouse is changing. Everything gets moving again.
Small signs that the greenhouse is coming back to life
While the last winter harvest is coming off the land, we are already busy planting summer vegetables. The greenhouse is being rearranged and filled with courgette, cucumber and, of course, tomatoes. The first flowers are also already showing themselves. Little signs that the greenhouse is coming back to life, and that a new season is just around the corner.
Tomatoes in the greenhouse
Tomatoes in particular are really starting to itch now. If all goes well, we can expect the first harvest in late June or early July. And they won't just be a few. Various varieties will soon grow side by side in the greenhouse, from the robust cœur de boeuf to juicy vine tomatoes and small, sweet cherry tomatoes in red, yellow and orange. The plum tomato will also regain its place. Each variety with its own taste, shape and character.
Tomato plants do require attention. Contrary to what many people think, they are not climbing plants by themselves. That's why we give them a helping hand by carefully tying them up with string. This way, they grow up nicely and the fruits stay off the ground. This is not only more practical when harvesting, but also better for quality. The tomatoes stay cleaner and the risk of diseases and bacteria is reduced. Especially when the fruits become heavier, this support is indispensable.
Soil health in the greenhouse
Besides what happens above ground, there is at least as much going on below ground. To keep the soil healthy, we change the location of our crops in the greenhouse every year. This way, we prevent the same plants from repeatedly extracting the same nutrients from the soil and reduce the risk of diseases. It is a way of working that may be less visible, but is essential for strong plants and a good harvest.
From seed to plate, exactly as it was meant to be. 🌱🍅
It is a special time of year. The greenhouse is full of promise. Where there are young plants now, the vegetables that will eventually end up on our plates will soon grow. From the first harvest to summer abundance: everything starts here, between glass and greenery.
